| Castanet Selected to Optimize Speed and Reliability of Content and Application Updates Over the Internet and to Enable Digital Delivery of Software and Offline Ads |
| MOUNTAIN VIEW,
Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2000-- Marimba, Inc. (Nasdaq: MRBA), a leading provider
of Internet infrastructure management solutions, today announced that its Castanet®
product solution has been selected by InterVideo, a leading developer of PC video software
and a provider of several multimedia applications, to manage its award-winning WinDVD®
2000 software. Castanet will enable InterVideo to distribute and update multimedia
applications, such as MP3 and DVD players, to millions of users via the Internet.
InterVideo will manage several applications with Castanet, enabling it to deliver content
and application updates. The first application to be distributed, WinDVD 2000, is a
leading software-only DVD player for the PC. InterVideo demands fast, efficient, secure downloads with checkpoint restart ability. Initially, InterVideo considered developing a software-updating infrastructure internally, but determined that Castanet was a much simpler, more cost-effective, and more reliable choice. ``For million-plus endpoint distribution over the Internet, we really had no other choice than Castanet unless we built an in-house solution. Castanet married RSA encryption, SSL technology, a market-proven protocol, and byte-level differencing capabilities into one product that does all the things we needed it to do,'' said Raul Diaz, vice president of business development at InterVideo. ``In addition, the Marimba solution has the proven unlimited scalability we absolutely require to support a customer base that is growing by about one million installations each month.'' According to Jon Peddie Associates (JPA), a leading market research firm covering digital media technology, sales of DVD players are expected to quadruple over the next four years with sales reaching nearly 20 million units by 2004. ``The digital entertainment industry is extremely competitive, so any service that we can immediately offer that adds value to our products is critical,'' Diaz said. ``Castanet has the unique ability to upgrade our growing family of applications to a soaring customer base securely, reliably, and seamlessly, and to dynamically update targeted marketing messages that are displayed when products are used offline. Moreover, because Castanet is so efficient, we will be able to transfer this information to our customers -- several million endpoints -- in as little as one-one-hundredth of the time it currently takes,'' concluded Diaz. Delivered via Castanet, InterVideo's customers will ultimately benefit from InterVideo's aggressive efforts to continually enhance its products. In addition, with all customers using similar versions of their software, InterVideo will be able to streamline technical support services. InterVideo WinDVD 2000 is available for downloading on InterVideo's Web site, as well as through InterVideo's OEM customers, which include the largest PC manufacturers. InterVideo WinDVD 2000 has won numerous awards, including PC Magazine's Editor's Choice and Winmag.com's Win100 award for the top 100 software products of 1999. InterVideo's software technology leverages existing consumer standards, including DVD (digital video disk) and DTV (digital television), and brings that technology to the central Internet platform: the personal computer. InterVideo is fully compliant with all the major consumer technology standards related to digital audio, video and graphics, including: MPEG1, MPEG2, AC-3, MPEG3, MPEG Audio layers 1 and 2, DVD, and DTV (including HDTV). The easy-to-use software user interface looks and feels like that of television, DVD players or the VCR. ``As the InterVideo implementation illustrates, Marimba's Castanet works well in an Internet environment with existing applications that need to be distributed to millions of users,'' said Jacqueline Ross, Marimba's vice president of marketing. ``Castanet was built and optimized for efficiency, security, scalability, personalization and flexibility. That's why it is the solution of choice when dealing with the complexity of the Internet.'' About InterVideo, Inc. (IVI) InterVideo is a leading provider of multimedia PC software.
