‘This Is Us’ Producer Drops Giant Bombshell About Sally and Nicky in Season 5

‘This Is Us’ Producer Drops Giant Bombshell About Sally and Nicky in Season 5

Warning: This Is Us season 5 spoilers from the latest episode below.

Never did we think that a broken snow globe in an airport could make us bawl our eyes out … until we watched last night’s This Is Us.

On Tuesday, fans saw Uncle Nicky (Griffin Dunne) travel across the country by himself during the COVID-19 pandemic to meet Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Madison (Caitlin Thompson)’s new twins. In between seeing him conquer his fears of traveling alone, viewers are taken on a deep and dark dive into younger Nicky (Michael Angarano)’s story, which is full of regret and plenty of “what ifs.” The biggest “what if” comes when we see a flashback of Nicky deciding to stay with his parents instead of running off to California to be with his love Sally (Genevieve Angelson). After that decision, it appears Jack’s younger brother continued to succumb to fear and self doubt, resulting in him becoming a recluse for 50 years.

Although the episode ended on a brighter note — Uncle Nicky made it to California to see his great niece and nephew and appears to be turning over a new leaf — the events made pretty much all of This Is Us Twitter sob uncontrollably. But beyond just feeling sad, many wanted to know more about Sally and what happened after Nicky stood her up. Did she take her van named Pearl and go to Woodstock alone? Did she ever make it to the West Coast? And, most importantly, is she still alive and will she and Nicky ever reunite?

When pressed by Entertainment Weekly on Sally’s whereabouts in the present, This Is Us story editor and producer Laura Kenar gave a very cryptic response that makes us think the two lovebirds’ story isn’t quite over yet.

“I think it would be very exciting if it did happen,” she told the outlet. “And I definitely was talking with the actress on set, Genevieve, about who she thinks could be the present-day Sally. So hopefully we will see that — my hopes as a fan and as a writer is that we do, because I love Sally, and I want to see more of her.”

Of course, “hoping to see” is not the same as saying “we will definitely see” Sally in the future. But given show creator Dan Fogelman‘s love of reuniting the Pearsons with long-lost loved ones and relatives (Randall with William, Randall with the story of his birth mother, and Uncle Nicky with Kevin), we wouldn’t be too surprised if this winds up being part of the grand plan.

Maybe Sally can be the secret one in the white car from the flash-forward scene. Who knows, but we really hope she and Nicky have a moment in the future together. After last night, things just need to go well for Nicky from here on out. Like we said before, watching that snow globe shatter after he worked so hard on it for the twins absolutely crushed us. Come on, This Is Us writers — the guy deserves a break!
