Why Isn’t There a New Episode of ‘Riverdale’ Tonight and When Will It Return?
Warning: Spoilers ahead. Wednesday is usually the best day of the week for Riverdale fans because that means it’s time for a new episode! With its constant twists and turns every week, the show continuously leaves fans on the edge of their seat. A new episode will not be premiering on The CW until August 11, 2021.
Sorry, guys, you’ll have to wait before finding out what’s going to happen to Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Archie Andrews and Jughead Jones now that they’ve moved back to Riverdale seven years after graduating high school. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Riverdale was forced to finish filming season 4 early. Now that they’re back with season 5, the seven-year time jump that viewers were promised is finally here. Archie is back from war, Jughead is an author, Betty is in the FBI and Veronica is married. Of course, their lives sound perfect, right? Well, the characters are dealing with adulthood, the failure of life in Riverdale and the questions of what’s going to happen now that there may be another murderer in town. Not to mention, things between Barchie are heating up!
“I think that that’s one of the dynamics we haven’t played is the idea [of] Archie and Betty together romantically,” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Us Weekly in May 2019. “I think in a teen show that if we somehow went seven years in that and never saw that, I think it would be a failure … So ‘maybe’ is what I’ll say.”
It’s unclear what’s going to go down between the BFFs next week, and going forward, but one thing’s for sure: we’re totally here for it. In fact, so is the show’s star KJ Apa. “It’s very fresh and new,” KJ told Entertainment Tonight in January 2021. “I feel like Archie and Betty really haven’t had an opportunity to — just because of the other relationships they’ve had with Veronica and Jughead — to really dive into their relationship.”
With the absence of a new episode, the anticipation of what’s going to happen next is killing us. So, why exactly isn’t there a new episode this week? When will the show return? Will it ever return?
