“Ben and Callum’s wedding day is a roller coaster,” warn EastEnders stars Tony Clay and Max Bowden
The moment we’ve all been looking forward to finally arrives in EastEnders, as groom Callum waits nervously at the register office for his beloved Ben to turn up. But given all the drama that’s unfolded in the run-up to the wedding, will the fan favourites actually tie the knot?
Lots of EastEnders viewers desperately want to see Callum and Ben happily married, and they’re not alone. As we join stars Tony Clay and Max Bowden – who play Callum and Ben – for a chat over Zoom about their characters’ big day, they tell us they’re also both keen for the lovebirds to make things official…
“We love working together, so we’d love Ben and Callum to be married,” reveals Max. “Obviously it will change the dynamic between them – I think when you’re in a relationship and you make that step towards marriage, the dynamic changes, regardless. And for these two characters, the stakes would get much higher if they are officially married; there’s so much baggage, and it’s a massive commitment.”
“They work really well together as characters,” agrees Tony. “Being married would just unite them and make them more of a force going forward. Ben and Callum deal with each other’s problems now, as opposed to fighting them on their own. They face their problems together, and that’s important for them going forward.”
“Ben and Callum are all in – if one of them has done something, the other wants to be there.”
But while Ballum are fully committed to each other, the biggest thorn in their side has been Ben’s dad, Phil, who’s unimpressed that his son is in bed with a copper. However, the disapproval runs both ways – and Ben’s also been pretty horrified by some of the romantic choices his dad has been making of late!
“Ben definitely doesn’t want his dad to get back with Sharon – that’s quite evident in their behaviour towards each other!” chuckles Max. “But I think he also sees Kat as a bit of a threat. Jessie [Wallace, who plays Kat] is sensational, and obviously has been part of some of the biggest EastEnders storylines ever. But in terms of her character, Kat is so upfront, and Ben is certainly intimidated by that.
“I don’t think Ben has an ideal woman for Phil,” he adds. “He’s never going to like anybody that Phil’s with. He wouldn’t even want him to get back with Kathy – she’s too pure for Phil!”
The actors are sworn to secrecy about whether or not the nuptials go ahead – however, Tony does promise fans a thrilling week, regardless.
“It’s a roller coaster,” he teases. “There’s a lot that happens with other characters surrounding the story, and a lot of emotions on both sides. It’s a really gripping week, and I think the viewers will be very excited to see it. I’m excited to see it! I think it’s going to be a real joy…”
