Designer Jan Jones Modernizes the Mix

Introduced by a broad arch and towering windows, the sunlight-flooded living room underscores Jones’ signature elegance as glass, metal, textiles, and art coalesce. Playful patterns in fabrics, the simple lines of a custom-made sofa, a modern Donghia coffee table, an antique Swedish side chair, and layering of an Oushak rug over seagrass furthers the informality.
As another nod to comfortable luxury, Jones boldly repurposed a carved table from the homeowners’ former patio for nook dining, outfitted with leather-strapped Oly chairs. The buffet is an antique Swedish piece the designer scored at the famed Round Top Antiques Fair, which she paired with an exotic Moroccan mirror.
The card room was painted a rich navy to create a cozy space, offering the perfect place to showcase the homeowners’ extensive Staffordshire porcelain collection.
In the serene master bedroom, Jones refashioned an existing heirloom desk as a bedside accent and freshened the feel with a sunny upholstered desk chair and yellow-and-pink Oushak rug. Dusty gray Legacy Home bedding and a Holly Hunt fur throw further the restful tone along with a pair of former chintz chairs recloaked in white linen.
Grays—accented with lively citrus colors—also dominate in the children’s bedroom. Plaid upholstered twin beds and a bold, striped Missoni rug elevate the vibe well beyond a typical child’s room.
Describing the entire design process as seamless, Jones credits the use of storyboards as a guidepost. “While electronic devices, and especially smartphones, are now used a lot in the design world, I’ve found the flipping back and forth of images to be confusing. Using the old-school method of photos glued on boards to capture the feel, layout, and tone of each room offers a more cohesive road map,” she says.
