“Sarah is secretly in awe of Carla – and so am I!” says Corrie’s Tina O’Brien
Coronation Street has been home to some of the strongest women in soap for over 60 years, and Carla Connor ranks high among the likes of legends Bet Lynch and Elsie Tanner.
But every cobbles queen is only as fabulous as the next Street siren nipping at their stiletto heels – and Sarah is certainly giving Carla a run for her money, both in business and as a Barlow, after Sarah talks Adam out of being a liver donor for Peter.
So, should Carla steel herself for a fierce new rivalry? Corrie sweetheart Tina O’Brien – who has been playing Sarah on and off since she was 16 – puts her game face on, as she chats to us about family life in and away from Weatherfield…
Hi, Tina! How would you sum up life for Sarah at the moment?
I think she’s really happy that things worked out with Adam, and pleased with how her career is going at the factory as well. Although, I think there is still a seed of resentment with regards to Adam’s fling with Carla that Sarah is not quite ready to let go of yet!
Who would you say she is more angry with at this point?
Both of them – however, Sarah has a really weird love-hate relationship with Carla. She’s absolutely in awe of her, but I think Sarah secretly feels a little bit insecure that she is not good enough in comparison with Carla. She respects her, yet at the same time this woman who is meant to be on her team went and slept with her partner.
How do the Barlows react after Sarah talks Adam out of being a donor for Peter?
Sarah knew that Carla would likely blow up, but I don’t think she’s expecting Carla to say, “You’re only doing this because you’re annoyed that I slept with him”. And to be honest, I don’t know if Sarah is doing it for that reason or not. Maybe there is a bit of that, though maybe she’s thinking more about her and Adam’s future.
Have you enjoyed working with Alison King, who plays Carla?
I really love working with Ali – she’s just mega! Although I was saying that Sarah is slightly in awe of Carla, I am actually in awe of Ali! I love watching her work. She is such a strong actress in the factory, and plays that stuff so well. I feel very lucky to work alongside her.
Do you enjoy playing the edgy side to Sarah?
Absolutely, I love the fact that she’s really driven. I’ve spoken to the costume department, and Sarah has some new power suits – she’s all about wardrobe and hair! And without Carla knowing it, Sarah is slowly learning from her and Nick at the factory. Sarah worked in fashion over in Milan before, and is possibly flying under the radar in terms of what she’s capable of, if she’s given the right opportunity.
