SPOILER ALERT: Holby City star speaks out after their character’s shocking death
This interview contains plot details from tonight’s Holby City that you may wish to avoid reading until you’ve seen the episode.
Hot on the heels of the BBC issuing Holby City with a DNR order (that’s Do Not Resuscitate in medical terms), viewers of the ailing medical drama were dealt another crushing blow – after fan favourite Kian was sensationally killed off in tonight’s episode!
The twist comes after almost 40,000 fans signed a petition to save Holby from the axe. However, sadly there is no chance of a reprieve for doomed Kian, as departing star Ramin Karimloo tells Inside Soap why it was time to hang up his character’s stethoscope for good…
“It’s been an absolute pleasure playing how Kian started and how Kian ended – and it had to end,” concludes Ramin, who leaves the show after three years of playing the handsome heart surgeon. “We played so much in that time that I think [carrying on] would have diluted the impact of this storyline, albeit a tragic and dark one.”
Tragedy struck after struggling drug addict Kian took an overdose, following the double stabbing horror of Andrei and Evie. And, despite Kian’s colleagues valiantly trying to revive him, Hanssen was sadly left with no choice but to call a Time of Death for Mr Madani.
“Honestly, I felt satisfied with Kian’s exit,” shares Ramin. “I felt we as a team did an amazing job with him. What I was sad to leave, however, was the folks at Holby. The creative team, crew and staff were all great characters, and I truly enjoyed watching every department contribute to making the show special.”
It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Kian. His romance with Jac and cliff-top nudity in the Welsh mountains will surely go down as some of his most memorable storylines. Although, Ramin’s personal highlights occurred fairly recently.
“My favourite moment would be having my wife, Amanda, stand in on a couple of episodes – and also my son doubling as a patient for me to operate on,” grins the star. “I was expecting to get emotional doing it when I wasn’t meant to be emotional – and that’s a testimony to how good the prosthetics were.
“I never anticipated that it would have knocked me like that,” adds Ramin. “Once the director yelled ‘cut’ I had to step away and have a word with myself. I don’t think I’ll have my sons step in for something like that again [laughs]!”
